Shots Fired Reports Near Library False Alarm

The Ukiah Police Department received a report of shots fired yesterday morning near the Ukiah branch of the Mendocino County Library on North Main Street. The UPD, assisted by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol, responded and closed off the streets surrounding the Library. Captain Justin Wyatt said callers reported hearing shots fired somewhere in front of the library at 105 N. Main St., at around 9:10AM, and that the activity was connected to a white van. While officers were searching for the suspect near the library, a MCSO deputy was alerted that the suspect was near Home Depot on North Orchard Avenue. Officers found the white van and its occupants — a man and woman who were arguing. The officer learned the two are living out of the van, and the woman was reportedly yelling and throwing items inside the vehicle, which may have caused the noises that people interpreted as gunshots.
