Hearing for Couple Accused of Child Abuse Delayed

The pre­lim­i­nary hear­ing for a cou­ple accused of abus­ing and tor­tur­ing their chil­dren has been post­poned for another two months to give the defense more time to review the evi­dence against his clients. Don­ald Earl Dunakin and his girl­friend of 30 years, Ina Selene Med­ina are each charged with 21 counts of tor­ture, and assault. The charges stem from inci­dents that date back to 1997, accord­ing to the Dis­trict Attorney’s Office. Author­i­ties believe the cou­ple abused at least two of their five chil­dren at var­i­ous times over a 13-year period. Accord­ing to pre­vi­ous reports from the Men­do­cino County Sher­iffs Office, the chil­dren believed to have been vic­tims ranged in age from 3 to 16 years old at the time of the alleged abuse. A third adult believed to have been involved in the abuse of the chil­dren was arrested Thurs­day in the ongo­ing inves­ti­ga­tion. Dunakin is held at the Men­do­cino County Jail under $3 mil­lion bail; Medina’s bail is $2.75 mil­lion. The DA’s Office says the cou­ple faces the pos­si­bil­ity of life in prison with­out parole.
