Ukiah Police Chief Chris Dewey says the area has seen an increase mail thefts lately. Dewey said most of the mail thefts reported this month have been on the south side of town, affecting streets like Betty and Lorraine, as well as Helen Avenue. Dewey says mail is a target because people are sending money and gift cards, and credit card companies are mailing new card offers and blank checks. Dewey said the best thing to do is have your mail delivered to a post office box, or use a locked mail box. He also says neighbors should keep an eye on each other’s homes and call police if they see anything suspicious.
